Study permit

The study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria

You can come to Canada to study if you

  1. Are enrolled at a DLI
  2. Prove you have enough money to pay for
    • your tuition fees
    • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
    • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
  3. Obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
  4. Are in good health and get a medical exam (if required) and
  5. Prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

Student Direct Stream:

If you’re a legal resident in certain countries, you may be able to get your study permit faster by applying  through the Student Direct Stream.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for faster processing through the Student Direct Stream, you must:

        1. Be a legal resident living in 1 of the following countries:
                  • Antigua and Barbuda
                  • Brazil
                  • China
                  • Colombia
                  • Costa Rica
                  • India
                  • Morocco
                  • Pakistan
                  • Peru
                  • Philippines
                  • Senegal
                  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
                  • Trinidad and Tobago
                  • Vietnam
        2. Have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution
        3. Live outside of Canada when you apply
        4. Have proof you have paid your tuition for your first year of study
        5. Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000
        6. Have a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration
          • This is only if you’re planning to study in Quebec
        7. Get a medical exam before you apply (if you need one)
        8. Get a police certificate before you apply (if you need one)
        9. Have your most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)
        10. Have a language test result that shows either:
          • an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic or general training score of 6.0 or higher in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening), or
          • a Test d’évaluation de français (TEF)  score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening)

WORK WHILE STUDYING

During regular school semesters, student may work up to 20 hours.

During scheduled breaks in your school year, like during winter and summer holidays:

  • Student can work full-time
  • Student can’t work during a break that comes before you start your very first school semester

Open work permit for spouse of International students

Your spouse or common-law partner may apply for an open work permit if you have a valid study permit or if you are a full-time student at a:

    •  Public post-secondary school, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec
    • Private college-level school in Quebec or
    • Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate degree)

Work Permit after finishing studies

The Post graduation Work Permit allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institutions to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience that is gained  helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class.

Length of the post graduation open work permit

A post-graduation work permit may be issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years.
