Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada.
There are 2 types of work permits.
1. Employer-specific work permit
An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit, such as
- the name of the specific employer you can work for
- how long you can work
- the location where you can work (if applicable)
2. Open work permit
An open work permit lets you work for any employer in Canada, without limitation. An OWP holder is not required to get an LMIA or employment confirmation initially. Once an OWP is obtained, the bearer is eligible to apply for and work in any job/occupation in Canada.You can only get an open work permit in specific situations.
Eligibility Criteria:
- A Temporary Foreign Worker’s spouse/common-law partner
- International Students’ spouses/common-law partners studying in Canada
- International students who have just graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution and are qualified to apply for a Post-Graduation Open Work Permit can do so.
- If your are being sponsored as a spouse/common-law partner for Permanent Residence through an Inland Spousal Application
- Candidates with International Experience Canada (IEC) (Working Holiday)
